Stone Statue of St Vitus
Hauptplatz 14 | St. Veit an der Glan

At the corner of the historical building at Hauptplatz14 stands a distinguished Late Gothic stone statue of Saint Vitus, the patron saint and namesake of the town of St. Veit an der Glan. This intricately carved figure, dating to the second half of the 15th century (c.14601470), exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the Carinthian Late Gothic tradition.

Fashioned from stone and mounted within a canopied corner niche, the sculpture presents Saint Vitus with youthful features and flowing hair. He wears ecclesiastical garments and holds a martyr’s palm in his right hand – a common symbol of sainthood. At his feet is the depiction of a lion. The pedestal beneath is decorated with a house mark and two striking relief heads – a characteristic feature of Gothic art.

Though the sculptor remains unknown, the formal and stylistic qualities point to a regional master influenced by the flourishing ecclesiastical art workshops of the late 15th century. The statue’s elevated placement on the building facade reflects both religious devotion and the integration of sacred imagery into the urban fabric of St. Veit’s historical centre.

Who was Saint Vitus?

Saint Vitus (Latin Vitus) was an early Christian martyr who died around 304 AD during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian. According to legend, he converted to Christianity as a child and refused to renounce his faith. As a result, he was tortured and eventually executed together with his tutor Modestus and his nurse Crescentia.

Vitus is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and was widely venerated in the Middle Ages. He was invoked against epilepsy (historically referred to as “St. Vitus’ Dance”), rabies, lightning strikes, fire, and diseases among animals. Many churches across Europe were dedicated to him.

The name of the town St. Veit an der Glan reflects this long-standing tradition of devotion to the saint.
