District Court

From Town Judge to District Court

St Veit an der Glan has been a seat of jurisdiction for centuries. As early as the Late Middle Ages, the town judge held court here, exercising far-reaching powers under the so-called jurisdiction of ban, outlawry, and blood court – even to the point of life and death. Later, the Town Hall became the seat of the state district court; from 1849 to 1926, civil and criminal cases were heard there.

With the judicial reforms of the 19th century, the modern district court emerged as a state judicial authority of first instance. It is responsible for the entire judicial district of St Veit an der Glan, which geographically corresponds to the political district. The higher court of appeal is the Regional Court of Klagenfurt.

The Courthouse in Gerichtsstraße

Today, the District Court is located in a dedicated courthouse at Gerichtsstraße 9, south of the historical town centre. The building, completed in 1927, is a 20th-century public structure and is listed as a cultural monument.

In recent years, special attention has been paid to accessibility. According to a phased plan by the Federal Ministry of Justice, the building has been gradually adapted and is now fully barrier-free, with an accessible service point and modern infrastructure.

Functions and Jurisdiction

As a district court, it deals with many of the population’s everyday legal matters, including:
–  Civil disputes (e.g. neighbourhood or tenancy cases)
–  Family law (e.g. maintenance, custody, certain guardianship matters)
–  Land registry and company register matters within its jurisdiction
–  Criminal cases within the lower sentencing range

Thus, the District Court serves as the first point of contact for the judicial resolution of conflicts or the registration of property rights.

The District Court Today

The District Court of St Veit is an essential part of the district’s public infrastructure. It combines a long legal tradition with the demands of a modern judiciary – from electronic case management to fully accessible facilities and clearly defined responsibilities. At the same time, it continues the town’s centuries-old legal heritage, from the medieval town judge to the court at the Town Hall and today’s courthouse in Gerichtsstraße.
