Glan Bridge with the Nepomuk Cross in Altglandorf
In the village of Altglandorf, a district of St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia, stands a two-arched masonry stone bridge dating from the 18th century. It spans the River Glan and is officially listed as a protected heritage monument.
As the waters of the River Glan were unregulated at the time of construction, the central pier of the double-arched Glan Bridge was specially reinforced to withstand the current. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, the revered protector of bridges and waterways, was symbolically placed on the parapet above the reinforced pier.
The Baroque statue, also dating from the 18th century, was created by the Austrian woodcarver Johann Pacher (c. 1699–14 March 1773). Over the centuries, it has undergone several restorations, the most recent of which was completed in 2016. This restoration was carried out by Marco Carlo Tomasi from Klagenfurt, commissioned by the Beautification Association of St. Veit. The works were coordinated by Dipl.-Ing. Winfried Pichorner in close collaboration with the Federal Monuments Authority.
Following the completion of the restoration, the so-called “Nepomuk Cross” was ceremonially blessed once again on Friday, 7 October 2016.
