Way of the Cross, Kalvarienberg
Peaceful Ascent with Scenic Views
At the northern edge of St Veit an der Glan, a short but fairly steep footpath leads up to the Kalvarienberg Church. The trail stretches around 750 metres through a shady deciduous forest and climbs approximately 45 vertical metres. Benches along the route invite hill walkers and hikers to pause and rest.
Rewarding View at the Summit
The Calvary Church of Maria Loretto was built in 1658 and is considered a small architectural gem. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of St Veit and its surroundings. Park benches invite visitors to sit and savour the peaceful atmosphere.
Old Way of the Cross vs
New Way of the Cross
The old “Way of the Cross” in St Veit once led steeply uphill from the east to the Calvary Church of Maria Loretto.
Due to extensive development on the sunny eastern slope, the Way of the Cross was relocated to the northern side of the hill during its redesign between 1969 and 1972. Since then it has run from Poganzerstraße to the church.
The new Stations of the Cross are adorned with bronze reliefs by Toni Rücker.
The most recent restoration of the Way of the Cross was carried out in 2013 at the initiative of the Beautification Society.
Old Stations of the Cross
Of the original Baroque Stations of the Cross that led up to the Calvary Church of Maria Loretto, only a single wayside chapel remains to the northwest of the church.
Inside the chapel stands a life-sized figure of the Man of Sorrows, carved around 1740–1750 by the St Veit’s Baroque wood sculptor Johann Pacher.
New Stations of the Cross
In 1972 new Stations of the Cross, featuring bronze reliefs by Toni Rücker, were installed on the eastern side of the Calvary Church.
