Civic Hospital
Introduction
The former civic hospital and the adjoining hospital church are located outside the historic old town of Sankt Veit an der Glan, near the site of the former Villach Gate.
Together, they form a two-storey Gothic building complex arranged around an elongated inner courtyard. This late medieval ensemble, later modified in the Baroque style, was first mentioned in historical records in 1321 under the name hospitale extramuros de sancto Vito.
The complex consists of four sections with one- to two-storey structures. In the 17th century, it was extended, and the courtyard was enhanced with arcaded walkways and round-arched cloisters. Following a fire in 1829, the civic hospital underwent extensive restoration.

More Information
The former civic hospital (Bürgerspital) was first documented in 1321 under the name “hospitale extramuros de sancto Vito” – meaning a hospital “outside the walls” of St. Veit. It was established by a wealthy widow named Dietmut, who endowed the institution as a charitable foundation for the needy.
In the 17th century, the complex was extended. A defining feature of this period is the arcaded inner courtyard with its characteristic round arches. A major fire in 1829 damaged large sections of the building, which were subsequently restored. The current roof form dates back to this reconstruction phase.
From Hospital to Cultural Centre
Between 1984 and 1987, the former hospital was thoroughly renovated and initially used as housing for young residents. Since 2004, the complex has served as a modern cultural centre.
Today, the site is home to a music school, sound studios, rehearsal spaces for theatre, and event venues. The striking arcaded courtyard regularly hosts open-air concerts, exhibitions and performances.
